An aid worker was confirmed killed and five others missing following an attack by Boko Haram militants in northeast Nigeria, the Action Against Hunger, an international humanitarian organisation, said on Friday.
In a statement made available in Abuja to newsmen, the organisation said a convoy of aid and health workers heading toward Damasak town in the northeastern state of Borno were attacked by the Boko Haram terror group on Thursday.
The aid worker, who was identified as a driver, was shot dead as the Boko Haram militants attacked three vehicles belonging to the humanitarian organisation, the statement said.
Two other drivers and three health personnel working for the Action Against Hunger are still missing, according to the statement.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident, as these are colleagues dedicated to providing life-saving assistance to individuals and families affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the northeast of Nigeria,” the humanitarian organisation said.
The Action Against Hunger strives to ensure that people in need of humanitarian assistance in Nigeria’s northeast region receive the essential services required for their survival, especially women and children, the statement said.
Last October, the Boko Haram group confirmed it executed Hauwa Leman, an aid worker with the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Boko Haram, which launched attacks in Nigeria’s northeast a decade ago, is known for its agenda to maintain a virtual caliphate in the most populous African country.
