A team from Nigeria’s most authoritative Islamic newspaper, Muslim News yesterday Thursday took to the streets of Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria for an awareness campaign in commemoration of the newspaper’s first anniversary.

The campaign, tagged #MuslimNews1stYearAnniversary was led by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Rawshield PR Media, publishers of Muslim News Nigeria, Mr Rasheed Abubakar.

Addressing his excited team who were beautifully attired in customized Muslim News white shirts, Mr Abubakar said the first anniversary campaign was aimed at creating awareness about the media outlet to the Muslims working and living around the Lagos State Government House, Ikeja and its environs.

According to him, the campaign was aimed majorly at interacting and reaching out to esteemed readers, widening the readership scope of the newspaper and also getting feedbacks.

He said, “We have carefully chosen this venue (Alausa Community Mosque) because of its importance to the Lagos Muslim community. Several activities go on here on a daily basis and officials of the Lagos State Government observe their prayers here. At the end of the activity, we are hoping they will support us and invest in the sustenance of the newspaper.”

The campaign, which kickstarted at the mosque premises by 1pm after Solatu Zuhr, saw the newspaper team interacting with the worshippers and giving them some of the newspaper past editions as complementary copies.

The crew then moved to the streets to sample people’s opinions about the newspaper, which currently has an active 24/7 website (muslimnews.com.ng), with 16, 000 followers on its Facebook page (MuslimNewsNG), and thousands of followers on Twitter (MuslimNews_NG) and Instagram (MuslimNewsNigeria).

One of the readers, Alhaji Abdul Wasiu Adedeji praised the brains behind the newspaper for striving to ensure balance, objective and fair reportage of Muslims and Islam in Nigeria and the world at large, and called on rich and elite Muslims to support and patronise Muslim News for its maintenance and sustenance.

Another reader, Alhaja Islamiyya Abimbola, who recently came to Muslim News urged the publisher to reach out to different Muslim organisations and Muslim leaders at the helms of affairs for support and  patronage.

As a result of the relative successes the publication has achieved in the last 12 months as an alternative print and online media for the Nigerian Muslim community, many are optimistic about its continued relevance and sustenance.

Mr Muyideen, who spoke with Muslim News after Solatul Asr (around 4pm) said, “We have had many Islamic-oriented newspapers which couldn’t sustain the pressure over time. Once they surface for some time, they go into extinction, never to return.

“But with what I’m seeing in Muslim News Nigeria, the sky is definitely the starting point. All necessary logistics should be in place including adequate online presence. With this, I’m certain the newspaper would go places,” he added.
