Sultan of Sokoto confirms sighting of new Crescent, says Wednesday is Dhul-Hijjah 1st

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared today, Wednesday, July 22 as the first day of the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah, 1441 AH.

This is contained in a statement by the Deputy Secretary-General of the NSCIA, Prof. Salisu Shehu.

According to him, there was proven sighting of the crescent of Dhul-Hijjah, 1441 AH in Nigeria on the 29th of Dhul-Qa’dah, 1441 AH, equivalent to Tuesday, 21st July, 2020. Therefore, Tuesday, 21st July, 2020 is the last day of Dhul-Qa’dah, 1441 AH

Dhul Hijjah crescent was sighted in different locations in Nigeria this evening, some of the locations are: Abuja, Jalingo, Ilorin, Lafia, Minna and Misau. Tomorrow is the 1st day of Dhul Hijjah, the Sultanate will release an official statement inshaallah.

“In line with the above, His Eminence, the President-General of NSCIA and Sultan of Sokoto, has approved Wednesday, 22nd July, 2020 as the 1st day of Dhul-Hijjah, 1441 AH,” he added.

The Council hereby enjoined the Nigerian Muslim Ummah to continue to promote peaceful coexistence and unity among all the citizens of the country.

“We equally call on the Ummah to rededicate themselves to worship Almighty Allah with full devotion and to intensify prayer to Allah for the eradication of Corona Virus and all other challenges facing the country such as insurgency, banditry and rape.

“While wishing the Ummah happy Eid-il-adha in advance, the Council prays that Allah spare our lives to witness it and many more. The Council also prays that Allah accept all our supplications, worship and sacrifices in the month of Dhul-Hijjah and beyond. Amin,” the statement read.
