Mixed reactions have trailed the appointment of National President of Jama’at Ta’awunil Muslimeen, Sheikh Daood Imran Molaasan as the Grand Mufti of Yorubaland.
Sheikh Molaasan officially received the certificate of his appointment from the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdul Rasheed Adewale Akanbi on Tuesday, October 5, 2021
Muslim News findings revealed that many Muslims, especially in the southwest region of the country have gone to the social media to express their views.
The development was coming few months after the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari appointed popular Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dr. Sulaiman Faruq Onikijipa as the Grand Mufti of Ilorin.
Those who kicked against the Tuesday appointment of Sheikh Molaasan said, like in the case of Ilorin, the Oluwo should have limited it to Iwo-land, where he is the Oba.
“Congrats!”, Said Imam Rafee’ Owonla Al-Ijebuwi Busayree [Ph.D], who also referred to himself as “the Grand-Mufti of Ijebu-Igbo”, wishing the appointee of Oluwo (Sheikh Molaasan) the best.
He, however said, “although I would have wished that the post is restricted to Iwo-land just as mine is for Ijebu-Igbo land and its environs.”
According to him, the encomium (Grand-Mufti of YorubaLand) is obviously about communal intrigues against the entire Yoruba Muslims. We must avoid random decisions so as not to be inciting unnecessary rows. Allah guide!
Oyesanmi Ibrahim Oyekayode also said, “Sheikh Daud Imran Molaasan is Mufti of Iwo land not Yorubaland.
He jokingly added that, “Any Mufti installed in Ile-Ife is the Grand Mufti of Yoruba Land because Ile-Ife is the source of Yoruba Land.”
Alhaji Alatise Kamorudeen described Molaasan’s appointment as an “amazingly wrong arrogation of power which doesn’t belong to the Oluwo.”
He said in his reaction monitored by Muslim News on Facebook that, “Is this Islam? The person whom this title is conferred on, is this the type of Sunnah he professes? Is Oluwo the Emir of Yoruba Land? When, where and who are the congregation of Yoruba Muslim that made Oluwo an Emir of Iwo, not to talk of Yoruba Land?
“Is Prophet Muhammad agreed to one arrogating the position that doesn’t belong to him? Does He (the Prophet) concented a scholar to accept position from unauthorized persons?” (sic), he asked.
There are, however, many individuals and groups within and outside Iwo, who welcomed Oba Akanbi’s decision to make the Amir of TAAWUN the Grand Mufti of Yorubaland, Muslim News can authoritatively confirm.
Torrents of congratulatory messages has filled up the social media space from the supporters and lovers of Sheikh Molaasan, who according to one Lasisi Saheed Olaide has successfully constructed over 100 Mosques across the southwest region.
On Thursday, October 7, the Muslim Board of Trustees in Osun State led by Sheikh Mudathir Akinlade expressed its gratitude to Oluwo for appointing Sheikh Molaasan as the Grand Mufti of Yorubaland.
Sheikh Akinlade made this known during a courtesy visit to the national headquarters of Ta’awun, Iwo to show their happiness on the right step taken by the Oluwo.
The group described Sheikh Molaasan as a golden son of Islam, who all Muslims must continue to pray for and support for a better future of Yoruba Islam.
Muslim News findings revealed that the coronation ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, October 30, 2021 at the palace of the Oluwo in Iwo, Osun State. Time is 10:00am
