The Lagos State Area Unit of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) has called on the Lagos State government to balance Christian Religion Study (CRS) with Islamic Religious Study (IRS) in subsequent entrance examinations into public schools in the state.
The Amir (President) of the state’s area unit, Mal. Miftaudeen Thanni made this call in a release issued on Thursday.
The reaction is on the heels of the 2020 entrance examinations where the examiners inserted Bible knowledge questions that were made compulsory for all candidates including pupils from Muslim homes.
The development has continued to generate a lot of reactions on social media, as concerned citizens condemned the action considered as deliberately unfair and unjust against Muslims and non-Christian pupils.
The Amir of the Muslim students’ body in Lagos State has averred that there should not be any question relating to Christianity or Islam in the general knowledge test in a public entrance examination in the first instance.
He, however, said, “It’s unfair and a disadvantage to other non-Christian candidates as the examination body did not insert not 1, but 2 to 3 Bible knowledge questions into the examination.
“This is condemnable. Hence it’s either no religious-related questions or there should be the inclusion of Islamic Religious Study in future examinations. This is the fairness, justice expected of the State.”
Besides, Mal. Thanni also urged Governor Babajide Sanwolu to issue a circular on the implementation of the Supreme Court judgment which affirmed the use of Hijab on school uniforms for any willing student.
He stressed that the issuance of a circular will prevent discrimination and assault on Hijab-wearing Muslim students by the time schools resume another academic session in September.
While on break, he appealed to parents and guardians to engage their wards in productive activities ahead of resumption.
He warned against the consequences of viewing sensitive content such as the ongoing TV reality show, Big Brother Naija which promotes illicit activities capable of ruining their lives.
