Coalition of Muslim Women for Asiwaju (COMWA) has pledged to embark on a massive awareness mobilisation from mosque to mosque in a bid to canvass more votes for the second term of the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and his Deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat.
The group made the promise on Tuesday at a press briefing in Lagos where it endorsed the re-election bid of Mr. Sanwo-Olu come Saturday, March 11, in Lagos State.
At the well-attended briefing by Muslim women who represented various Islamic women organisations in the country; the National Coordinator, Alhaja Rasheedat Adebari said the governor has done so well for Lagosians and Nigerians at large in the last four years.

She said: “As a Muslim body, we have come out to join millions of Lagosians to pledge our support for Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, who has done wonderfully well for the people of Lagos State in the last four years. The Governor deserves our support for another four-year tenure because under him, Lagos State has witnessed massive development and he has touched the lives of many Nigerians with his policies.”
Adebari recounts Sanwo-Ou’s strides and the number of ways he has shown compassion and empathy towards the people of Lagos.
According to her: “We hasten to reckon that under him, the Blue Line that has been abandoned for years has finally seen the light of the day. The Red Line is also nearing completion. And this is apart from many road projects that are ongoing across the State. The 4th Mainland Bridge recently contracted and the Opebi-Iya Alaro link bridge inching to competition are good testimonies of a government that is strategic in infrastructural development. The impacts of these two bridges decongesting roads and shortening journey time when they are completed are better imagined in a state where quantum of man-hour is often lost in traffic.
“The massive infrastructure in the health sector with conversion of some primary health centres to general hospitals is giving us the hope and the belief that a re-election of Governor Sanwo-Olu will come along with more blessings and dividends of democracy. He would continue on the glorious path laid by his predecessors and remain faithful to the master plan of the State. We are also hopeful that he will deepen his policies on free health for children below 18 and the health scheme that enables Lagosians, irrespective status and family size to pay a token for healthcare in any hospital of their choice.
“We cannot but remember the Imota 32-metric tons per hour Rice Mill, knowing the importance of food, particularly rice, in the life of a typical Nigerian family. The historic mill is billed to provide 1,500 direct employments for Lagosians and 254,000 indirect labour apart from reducing the price of rice in a nation where the major staple food is rice. The gift of two universities, the Lagos State University of Science and Technology and the Lagos State University of Education also come to mind with their capacity to reduce the number of our youths seeking admission every year. A governor who prioritises the welfare of the people and means well for the youths deserves our support at a time like this.”
One of the highlights of the event covered by Muslim News was a special prayer for Nigeria, success of the forthcoming gubernatorial election and the newly elected president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Different portions were recited from the glorious Qur’an during the prayer session.
Also speaking the event, a Patron of COMWA, Alhaja Sherifat Sherifah Yusuf-Ajibade thanked members of COMWA and women generally for voting for Jagaban on the 25th of February, but said it’s not over yet, until it’s over on March 11th.
“We appreciate the sacrifices of our members and all women in general who came out to vote massively for the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on February 25. However, the job is not fully done until Governor Sanwo-Olu is re-elected on March 11. Lagos cannot afford to be in opposition when the father of modern Lagos, Asiwaju Tinubu is the president. Conceding Lagos to another party will be a disservice to Asiwaju and a huge trajectory setback. We must all come out with our friends and family members to vote for the governor.”
Alhaja Ajibade stressed the fact that members of COMWA are ready to go out of their way for Babajide Sanwoolu, saying, they are ready to take the gospel from mosque to mosque.
“Lastly, let me assure all lovers of good governance that we are fully committed to the re-election of Governor Babajide and we are prepared to go from to mosque to mosque to mobilise for him. We have started doing this already but we are going to intensify our efforts this week so that many women will troop out on Saturday, in shaa Allah.”
She, however, implored INEC’s adhoc staff to be steadfast and abstain from all forms of compromise. She warned candidates who may not emerge and their supporters to refrain from acts or sayings that can distract the electoral umpire, and cause commotion within the states and the country. She equally tasked the media on objective reportage.
