On Sunday, members of the Lekki Muslim Ummah (LEMU) converged at the Vice Admiral Jubrila Ayinla Multipurpose Hall, Lekki Central Mosque Complex, for the quarterly Da’wah workshop.
Though a Ramadan edition, the organisers chose to address another important topic.
The workshop that had its theme as “Every Soul Shall Taste Death” was meant to charge members and prepare their minds for a meeting with Allah in the hereafter.
Why we’re discussing about death in the month of Ramadan – President
LEMU President, Dr. Abdul-Ganiu Labinjo, in his welcome address, said the quarterly Da’wah program is organised to propagate the pristine message of Islam among its members and the general public.
He said: “Da’wah is phenomenal in Islam. We spread the message and educate ourselves through it. It is part of what we need to do as the Ummah of the Prophet (SAW) and LEMU does it every quarter.
“This episode is for Ramadan. We always ensure that they hold during Ramadan. The theme this year is “Every soul shall have a taste of death”.
Death is a reality and if we are mindful of it, every day, society and the entire world will be better. Death is final and certain. Our leaders seem to forget that no one lives forever, so, they abuse offices”, he noted.
‘The events of the day of judgment’
In his lecture, ‘The Day of Judgment and Life in Paradise and hell’, Sheikh (Dr.) Munirudeen Salahudeen (Ar-Riyaadhy), a lecturer at the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Proprietor, Zamzam Academy in Ogun State, described the event on the day of resurrection, explaining how the trumpet will be blown and everything will cease to exist.
According to him, “Today, I’m to talk about the day of resurrection, what events will lead to that day as described by the Prophet (pbuh). For instance, he (SAW) said the trumpet will be blown twice on that day. The first will mark the end of the universe and all that is in it before Allah (SWT) commands Angel Israfil to blow it for the second time when the resurrection of every creature will begin.”
Sheikh Ar-Riyaadhy, who was quoting from the authentic narration of Prophet Muhammad, SAW, explained that the interval between the first and second blowing is not less than 500 years thereabout.
“The resurrection and adjudication will be done in stages, where everyone will await their verdict. Allah will decree who goes to Jannah or hell. Some people will be totally exonerated on that day, they’ll not be subjected to trial or questioning. Allah will just grant them admittance into eternal bliss. These are people who believed in Allah, had absolute reliance on Him and did not engage in soothsaying.”
‘Intercession of the Prophet (SAW) on the day of judgment’
Talking about intercession on the day of judgment, the revered Islamic scholar said only Prophet Muhammad, SAW, would be granted by Allah, the power to intercede.
“Every man will come together in search of someone that will intercede on their behalf. They will rush to Adam (AS) but he will turn them down; they will go from one messenger of Allah to another until they approach the Prophet Muhammad, SAW, who will intercede for them. It’s one of the greatest favours Allah granted Prophet Muhammad, SAW. He didn’t give other Prophets or Messengers.
Collection of books of deeds with right, left hands
The Proprietor, Zamzam Academy also mentioned that on the day of judgment, some human beings will receive their books of deeds with left hand, while others, with right hand.
According to him, on the day of judgment, some people will be given their books of deeds from the right while some, from the left. The right hand signifies success while the left signifies failure.
“We want everyone to know that our death in this world isn’t the end of the journey. We are still transiting and its better for the living to know a lot of things to do to prepare for it.
“The wise among you is the one that is preparing for that day. We are here to tell everyone that death can come anytime and we should be prepared for it by doing good at all times and avoiding evil,” he said.
Allah does not take sins and misconduct lightly – Imam Ridwan Jamiu
Imam Ridwan Jamiu, the Chief Imam of Lekki Central Mosque, who also spoke at the programme on Life in the Barzakh, said that Allah (SWT) does not take sins and misconduct of humans lightly.

Muslim News gathered that Al-Barzakh is the period between a person’s death and his resurrection on the Day of Resurrection, adding “Whoever dies as a Muslim, obeying Allah, will be in a blessed state and whoever dies as a disbeliever, disobeying Allah, will be punished.
According to Imam Jamiu, the punishments vary according to the sins committed. For instance, male and female adulterers will be stripped naked and disgraced publicly. People who profit from usury, interest will also be tormented.
We have to be very careful with the issue of interest. That’s some people’s main source of income today and we all transact with interest-giving commercial banks. Children who die before puberty will be in the care of Prophet Ibrahim (AS).
Speaking further, Imam Jamiu quoted a Hadith, where the Prophet (SAW) was passing by some graves with his companions. He (SAW) said the people in the grave were being punished for things they took with levity during their lifetime.
“The first was a slanderer. The second didn’t do thorough cleaning after passing waste and he was being punished for that. You can now see that nothing should be taken lightly.”
The Chief Imam of Lekki Central Mosque admonished that whoever attains the age of 40 should remain upright afterward, adding that people who reach the age of 60 should prepare themselves for the hereafter.
“The Prophet (SAW) prophesied that his people’s life expectancy is between 60 and 70 except for a few. He lived for 63 years himself, which is equivalent to 60 years of the Gregorian calendar. So, once anyone attains the age of 60, they should be very upright and admit that the end is near.
“The age of 40 is also very significant. It is marked for maturation as Allah says in Qur’an 46 verse 15. Hence, whenever anyone adds a year, it means they are a year closer to their departure from this world. Once you are 40, just conclude that what you have left is not up to that which you’ve expended and when you attain 60, start dotting your I’s and crossing your T’s in preparation for the hereafter.”
He added that no one will celebrate or party on the demise of another if only they knew the realities ahead of the deceased.
