2025: Nigerian senator expresses optimism, urges citizens on individual responsibility

Sen. Salis (m) during his speech.

The Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, Shuaib Afolabi Salis has called on Nigerians to attach more importance to individual responsibility and consciousness on what portends good and bad for the country.

Speaking at the Da’wah Holiday Programme at the Lagos State Model College on Wednesday, 25th December 2024, Senator Salis disclosed that not all problems facing the country are borne out of governance.

He said: “Let us as a people have some sense of reawakening. Not all the problems we are facing as a people are borne out of governance. Societies don’t thrive on material wealth only. We need to up our game across the lines of national orientation and values. Some of the problems are informed by our attitude as a people.

L-R: Alhaji J.B Alli-Oluwafuyi, Lagos District Amir, Alhaji Abdul Kabir Olayiwola Baruwa, the Chairman of the formal opening, Alhaji Muritadha Adeniji, The Companion National Amir, Engr Kamil Olalekan and former NAHCON Chairman and Chief Executive, Ustadh Zikrullahi Hassan.

“On my way here, someone in a moving car wound down to dispose of an empty pet bottle on the road. You don’t need any explanation to know that the pet bottle will eventually clog the drainage system and aggravate environmental issues affecting the society in its entirety. That is just one of the many cases in which the citizenry contributes to the problems of the country.

“No government can effortlessly prosper as a nation without the support and cooperation of the people. Therefore, as a people, we must also play our part in making our country a better place for everyone.”

He expressed great hope that 2025 will usher positive developments for the nation.

“The year 2024 has come with teething problems and challenges. Thank God it’s wrapping up already, as we look forward to 2025, I’m confident it offers significant hope. If you look at the media chat of the president, you’ll see that the policies of this administration, including the Student Loan will cushion the effects of hardship in the country.

“The president has also availed the National Assembly of the 2025 Budget and I can assure you that the National Assembly will do justice to it. it will bring a lot of succour, comfort and solace to the people. Some of the reforms and programmes of the president will also begin to manifest. We have identified so many problems that we have, and we’re tirelessly working around the clock to resolve them. Hence, in the coming year, we’ll record fuller realisation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Senator Salis, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on ICT & Cybercrimes, added that the federal government has empowered local governments to address more problems at the grassroots.

“You’ll see that the federal government has given more autonomy to the sub-nationals, especially the local government. This will enable them to tackle problems of infrastructure, health and education, among other pressing issues from the grassroots.”

The Distinguished Senator implored Nigerians to show gratitude to God.
