Sheikh Shafi’i’s daughter Labeebah obtains Master’s Degree with distinction from UNILAG

…Emerges best graduating Student in department of Marine Sciences

…Feat follows first-class undergraduate degree in Marine Biology

Labeebah Damilola Dhikrullah, one of the daughters of revered Muslim scholar Sheikh Dhikrullah Shafi’i, has also distinguished herself by emerging as the Best Graduating Student in her Master’s programme at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

Labeebah, who studied Marine Pollution and Management, in the department of Marine Sciences, graduated with distinction during the 2022/2023 academic session.

Currently, UNILAG is holding her 55th Convocation Ceremonies, where Labeebah was celebrated as one of the 6,659 students awarded postgraduate degrees.

As a hijabi Muslim lady, she has a history of academic excellence, having graduated four years ago with first class honours in Marine Biology from the same university.

Labeebah was among the top three students in her 2019/2020 undergraduate class, achieving a CGPA of 4.65.

“Thankfully, with prayers, support, and advice from my family and mentors, I was able to achieve this feat again four years after completing my first degree.

“This time, I ended up with a CGPA of 4.83 for my master’s programme. I remain very grateful,” she stated in an interview with Muslim News after receiving her certificate on Thursday, 16th January.

Labeebah, who is also a sales associate for Muslim News, expressed her gratitude to Allah (SWT), her family, friends, well-wishers, and the entire Muslim community.

She views her accomplishment as a reward for her continuous dedication while acknowledging that there is still more to achieve.

“I feel a sense of accomplishment. This indicates that I striven hard and received constant reminders from people who encourage me not to settle for less,” she said.

The Muslimah mentioned that despite earning a first class degree in her undergraduate studies, she understood that obtaining a distinction in her master’s programme would be challenging.

“I knew a master’s programme would be tougher than an undergraduate programme and would require a lot of hard work and dedication, especially in my unique field, which necessitates extra effort. Therefore, achieving distinction is not something that comes easily.”

While pursuing her master’s degree, the Iwo, Osun State born Scholar has also been building her brand as a Marketing Director with Muslim News and engaging in research. Now that she has completed her second degree, she looks forward to opportunities in reputable firms where she can apply her knowledge and expertise as a marine scientist.

“Given my master’s focus on Marine Pollution and Management, I hope to join a company where my expertise will be relevant and contribute to organizational goals. Companies involved in importation, exportation, ecosystem management, and related fields would be ideal for my growth and success.

“Multinational oil companies that prioritize extracting resources without harming aquatic life would also provide ample opportunities for learning and development. I’m looking at organisations such as NPA, NNPC, NLNG, and others where my knowledge can be applied.”

Labeebah, who did her NYSC at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Abuja, encouraged younger students to be certain about their career choices, saying, “It can be competitive and challenging out there. Therefore, you need to be sure of your goals; you can’t just enter the field unprepared.”
