Top professionals stress value-driven careers, integrity in decision-making, and rising female leadership in the workplace
The fifth edition of the GRAMA Conference, themed “A VUCA World: Pathfinding the Labyrinth,” convened a diverse audience of professionals, faith leaders, and young changemakers for a day of impactful dialogue centered on international migration, entrepreneurship, leadership, and corporate governance.
Held on Saturday, May 3, at the Tayo Aderinokun Hall, University of Lagos (UNILAG), the event opened with a keynote address delivered by the Chief Executive Officer of Omnicom Solutions Limited, Engr. Faheed Olajide. Emphasizing the central theme, he called for resilience in a volatile world.
“Crisis creates opportunity if you change your perspective,” he noted. “Ask the right questions, and let clarity come from focusing on your purpose. Our ultimate purpose is to worship Allah sincerely. With that in mind, even difficult times can become stepping stones.”
In his welcome address, GRAMA President, Taiwo AbdulKabir Kuye, offered an overview of the organisation’s activities over the past year. He highlighted key achievements and challenges, notably in the area of finance. “We have grown through collective efforts and faced our challenges with faith and determination,” he stated. He called on members to renew their commitment to the goals of GRAMA and actively participate in future engagements.
The “Beyond Borders” breakfast session, moderated by journalism Don, Prof. Ismail Ibraheem of the Department of Mass Communication, UNILAG, addressed the intricacies of international migration. He urged young Nigerians to plan intentionally before relocating. “Education is not a scam. It is a necessary preparation for life beyond our home countries,” he asserted. He advised youths to consider strategic migration paths and emphasised maintaining faith and purpose: “Trust in Allah and remain consistent in your faith. Let your goals be guided by purpose, not pressure.”
Three other breakfast sessions added further depth to the morning discussions. In the “Life Mastery Clinic,” Engr. Jamiu Badmos, Managing Consultant at Finsbury Heinz Ltd, reminded participants of the power of resilience: “No matter how tough life is, you can get over it. Work isn’t where you go, it is what you do.”
In the “Teach, Thrive, Transform” session, the Director, Dreampark Montessori School, Rahmat Oguntola emphasised innovative learning strategies: “Transformation involves innovative practices that challenge traditional methods. Active listening, persistence and collaboration are key aspects of transformational learning.”
The “Entrepreneurship 360” session, facilitated by Mr. Taofik Ajao, CEO of Tsamer Nigeria Ltd and Independent Director at PayVantage, redefined entrepreneurship as a commitment to solving societal problems. “An entrepreneur is someone who sees a need and finds a solution,” he stated. He cautioned against financial recklessness: “Be smart with your money. Don’t gamble with your future.”
The panel session on corporate governance, leadership, gender, and ethics provided multidimensional insights. Lead discussant Mrs. Bimpe Afolabi, Partner, Internal Audit and Governance, Risk and Consulting Services at KPMG West Africa, reflected on the updated “D VUCA D” theme – Disruption and Diversity. “Women must rise confidently. Don’t wait for permission; create your own platform,” she advised.
Mr. Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, of Sofunde, Osakwe, Ogundipe and Belgore, SOOB, emphasised integrity: “The law is based on equity. Let your character reflect your profession. People may not see everything, but Allah does.”
Mr. Tella Fatai, Chief Operating Officer of The Alternative Bank, highlighted the value of time and faith in decision-making. “Time is the only currency we spend without knowing the balance,” he said. “Don’t trade your principles for approval. Ethical compromise is self-sabotage.”
In her closing remarks, Mrs. Azeezah Muse-Sadiq, Partner at Banwo & Ighodalo, urged attendees to lead with value. “Be known for your value, not your title. Faith, foresight, and professionalism will take you further than shortcuts. Allah’s timing is deliberate, not delayed. Hold on to your integrity, and your success will last.”
Chairman of the Planning Committee, Lateef Sanni, thanked all stakeholders for their support in making the conference a success. He called on participants to implement the insights and knowledge gained from the sessions. He also led the presentation of an award to the most outstanding volunteer, Sodiq Aremu, recognising his dedication and exceptional contributions to the event.
As the curtains drew on the fifth GRAMA Conference, participants left inspired and equipped to navigate the complexities of a VUCA world with purpose, faith, and professionalism.
