Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Pantami, has urged couples to build their marriages on affection, mercy and patience, describing marriage as the most important social institution in human history.
Professor Pantami made the call on Friday night in Maiduguri, during a pre wedding event held for four children of Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, who are scheduled to get married today.
The four children are Umara, Mamman, Abba and Aisha.
Muslim News gathered that the Nikaah ceremony has attracted attention in Maiduguri, with family members, scholars and dignitaries gathering to celebrate the joyous occasion while also reflecting on the values needed to sustain successful marriages.
Speaking at the gathering, Professor Pantami highlighted the spiritual and social significance of marriage, noting that an ideal marriage contributes to the completion of half of one’s faith, provides peace and tranquillity, attracts divine rewards, builds responsible families and helps in creating a decent society.
He said, “The most successful marriage is not the one built only on love, but rather the marriage that is built on affection and mercy.”
According to him, affection in marriage comes from genuine love, care and emotional closeness, stressing that any union lacking affection and mercy falls short of its true purpose.
The respected Muslim scholar explained that the benefits of marriage can only be sustained through patience, which encourages tolerance, forgiveness, perseverance and mutual respect between spouses.
Professor Pantami noted that strong families are products of patience, saying that every individual is a beneficiary of the sacrifices and endurance shown by parents in marriage.
He said, “We are all products of marriage as a result of the patience of our parents through their tolerance, caring, perseverance and respect.”
The Islamic scholar expressed concern over the rising rate of marital breakdown among young couples, attributing many failed marriages in the early years to impatience and lack of tolerance.
He urged the younger generation to embrace contentment, forgiveness and perseverance in order to build enduring homes.
Prof Pantami said, “We need to guide our younger generation on tolerance, contentment, forgiveness, respect for one another, perseverance and affection.”
He concluded by praying for blessings upon all couples and asking Allah to unite families upon goodness.
He said, “May Allah bless all couples, may He shower His blessings upon them, and may He unite them on goodness.”
