Ogogo

After decades of captivating audiences with his performances on screen, the final curtain has fallen on veteran Nollywood actor, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, who has died at the age of 65.

The celebrated Yoruba actor’s death was confirmed on Sunday, August 23, 2026, by multiple sources, including the founder of Best of Nollywood, Seun Oloketuyi, who announced the news on social media.

Oloketuyi wrote, “Taiwo Hassan Ogogo is dead. He finally lost the battle of life.”

The news of Ogogo’s death was also met with tributes from colleagues and family members, with his daughter, Kaira Taiwo, seen crying during a live session on Instagram on Sunday as she expressed disbelief over her father’s passing.

Veteran actor and filmmaker, Saheed Balogun, also mourned Ogogo, describing his death as painful.

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. You can rest now my brother Taiwo Hassan Ogogo. May Almighty Allah guide you through Aljannah. This is truly painful,” Balogun wrote.

The Islamic expression “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un”, meaning “Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return,” is drawn from the Qur’an.
Allah says in the Qur’an: “Every soul will taste death.” (Qur’an 3:185)

The verse serves as a reminder that death is an inevitable reality for every human being, regardless of age, status or accomplishments.

Battle with cancer

Ogogo’s death came days after his daughters appealed publicly for medical assistance for their father, who had been battling stage-four cancer.

On Monday, August 17, 2026, Kaira and Lima Taiwo took to social media to seek medical advice and assistance for the actor.

According to Kaira, doctors had informed the family that they could no longer administer chemotherapy because of his condition.

The family subsequently explored alternative treatment options, including specialised medical procedures and traditional remedies, as they sought to save his life.

Despite the efforts, the veteran actor eventually passed away on Sunday.

His death has since triggered an outpouring of grief among colleagues, admirers and members of the Yoruba film community, where he was regarded as one of the prominent figures who contributed significantly to the development of the industry.

A life on screen

Ogogo was particularly known for his contributions to Yoruba-language films and spent decades entertaining audiences through his distinctive acting style and memorable roles.

His career made him a familiar face to generations of Nigerian movie lovers and established him as one of the recognisable names in the Yoruba film industry.

As tributes continue to pour in, his passing also offers a solemn reminder of the temporary nature of life.

The Qur’an says: “Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your full compensation on the Day of Resurrection.” (Qur’an 3:185)

For Muslims mourning the actor, his death is therefore a moment to remember Allah, pray for the deceased and reflect on the certainty of the Hereafter.
