The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has finally honoured a Muslim cleric, Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, three years after saving over 200 Christians from attacks in Barkin Ladi LGA, Plateau State.
Imam Abubakar was among a few other dignitaries honoured by the Christian body at the “Sapphire CAN Day” Award of Excellence and Dinner organised to mark the 45th anniversary on Saturday’s night in Abuja.
It would be recalled that Imam Abubakar saved over 200 Christians during the June 2018 clashes, when suspected herdsmen invaded 15 communities in Barkin Ladi LGA, killing over 200 people.
The United States Government in July 2019 honoured the 83-year-old Muslim cleric along with four religious leaders from Sudan, Iraq, Brazil and Cyprus, with the 2019 International Religious Freedom Award, which is given to advocates of religious freedom.
Other recipients of awards include Nigeria’s Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo; A former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (Rtd); former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, among others.
