Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has praised The Criterion (Al-Furqan), a group of Muslim women in business and the professions, for their positive impact on society, especially their interventions in correctional centres and other humanitarian efforts.
He made the remarks on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by the group at the Lagos State Government House, Alausa, ahead of their 13th National and 4th International Biennial Conference.
The five-day conference, themed “Breaking the Glass Ceiling: Muslim Women Overcoming Economic and Social Challenges,” is scheduled to be held from Wednesday, November 12 to Sunday, November 16, 2025, at Orchid Hotel, Lekki, Lagos.
The Deputy Governor encouraged the group to promote Islam in a positive light by highlighting the noble teachings of the Qur’an and Hadith, as well as referencing respected global views about Islam and the recognition of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) as the most influential personality in history.
He pledged his support and confirmed his intention to attend the event in person, assuring the group of the state government’s readiness to back their impactful initiatives.
Dr. Hamzat also encouraged the organisers to extend awareness of the conference beyond the venue, so more Muslims can benefit from the discussions and outcomes.
Group expresses appreciation
The International Amirah of The Criterion and Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Alhaja Medinat Akanni, who led the high-powered delegation, expressed their appreciation for the warm reception given by the Deputy Governor.
Also speaking, Hajia Ibironke Siddqah Ogun, Chairperson of the National Conference Planning Committee, stated; “We are delighted that one of us; the Deputy Governor has confirmed he will grace the occasion with us. His reception was very warm and heartfelt. We are truly impressed. He really demonstrated that he is a father to all.”
Alhaja Dhikrah Matesun-Oshodi, immediate past Amirah of the Lagos District and Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee, also expressed her excitement, saying, “Now that we are assured of the Deputy Governor’s attendance, all hands are on deck as we prepare to welcome our guests.”
Muslim News gathered that registration is ongoing for the conference, which is an all-female programme designed for both members and non-members within and outside Nigeria.

Formal opening ceremony
The formal opening ceremony on Thursday, November 14, is free and open to the general public, including men, with Prof Olayinka Ramota Karim, Vice Chancellor, Fountain University, Osogbo, as the lead speaker, dissecting the theme.
Muslim News gathered that the conference will feature a variety of enriching activities, including a special session for secondary school girls, Da’wah programmes, community visitations, and a grand Alasalatu prayer gathering expected to unite Islamic groups across Lagos on Friday, November 15.
On Saturday, the association will hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in the morning, followed by a leisure trip to The Country Beach, Okun Mopo, Lekki, offering delegates a relaxing experience by the seaside. The conference will conclude with the departure of guests on Sunday, November 16.

Other prominent Muslim personalities who graced the meeting include Alhaja Monsurat Alli-Oluwafuyi, the first Amirah of The Criterion; Alhaja Lateefah Fahm, a member of the Board of Trustees; Alhaja Mutiat Hassan, former Amirah of the Lagos District and MD/CEO of Distinct International Properties Ltd.
Also in the delegation were Dr. Shareefah Adejoke Yusuf, retired Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of Lagos State’s Education District VI; Hajia Aminah Muhammad, Public Affairs Officer of the Lagos District and MD/CEO of Aims Media Company Limited; and Hajia Maryam Arinola Alege, immediate past National Secretary and Secretary of the Local Organising Committee.
They were accompanied by Barr. Zikrullah Hassan, former Chairman/CEO of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).
