The Federal Government has dismissed as false and misleading reports circulating on social media alleging plans to scrap the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS), reaffirming its commitment to supporting all recognised educational institutions in the country.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Education and signed by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Boriowo Folasade.
According to the ministry, its attention was drawn to a message being widely shared on social media and other online platforms claiming that the Federal Government and the National Assembly were considering a move to abolish NBAIS.
“The Ministry wishes to categorically state that the claim is false, misleading, and entirely unfounded,” the statement said.
The ministry stressed that it had neither initiated nor proposed any bill before the National Assembly seeking the abolition of NBAIS. It further stated that it had not endorsed, supported, or contemplated any policy aimed at undermining the board’s statutory mandate.
The clarification follows the circulation of a viral publication alleging that government authorities were planning to discontinue the activities of NBAIS, a claim that generated concerns among students, parents, teachers, Islamic organisations, and other stakeholders.
The ministry expressed concern over the spread of the unverified report, warning that such misinformation could create unnecessary anxiety and erode public confidence in government institutions.
It reiterated that NBAIS remains a duly recognised examination and certification body operating within Nigeria’s educational framework and continues to enjoy government recognition and support.
“The Federal Government continues to support all legally established educational institutions and examination bodies in accordance with extant laws, national education policies, and the principles of inclusiveness, equity, and equal opportunity,” the statement added.
The ministry therefore urged Nigerians to disregard the publication in its entirety and avoid sharing unverified information capable of misleading the public.
It also advised stakeholders to rely solely on official communications from the Federal Ministry of Education and other authorised government channels for information relating to education policies, programmes, and reforms.
Reaffirming its commitment to the education sector, the ministry said it remains focused on promoting quality education, national cohesion, and constructive engagement with stakeholders in advancing the nation’s educational objectives.

The National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) is a federal examination and certification body established by the Nigerian government to regulate, standardise, and promote Arabic and Islamic education across the country. It was created to provide a unified curriculum and conduct examinations for students in Arabic and Islamic schools.
NBAIS administers examinations at the basic and senior secondary school levels and issues certificates recognised by the Federal Government for admission into tertiary institutions and employment opportunities. The board works under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Education and is responsible for ensuring quality assurance, curriculum development, teacher training, and the accreditation of Arabic and Islamic schools.
The board plays a significant role in integrating Arabic and Islamic education into Nigeria’s formal educational system, enabling students from such schools to obtain qualifications equivalent to those issued by other recognised examination bodies in the country. Its certificates are accepted by many Nigerian universities and other higher institutions for admission purposes.
