* As FG declares Tuesday public holiday to mark Mawlidun Nabiyy
President of Religious Affairs at the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque Sheikh Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Sudais has urged Muslims to demonstrate their love for Prophet Muhammad (SAW) through continuous adherence to his teachings and Sunnah, rather than limiting devotion to seasonal observances.
The Imam and Khateeb of Masjid al-Haram made the call during his Friday sermon at the Grand Mosque in Makkah on Friday, August 21, 2026, as Muslims in Nigeria and other countries prepare for Mawlidun Nabiyy and reflect on the life and legacy of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
Muslim News gathered that Sheikh Al-Sudais’s admonition came on the same day the Federal Government declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Mawlidun Nabiyy.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on Friday, urging Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the values associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
Mawlidun Nabiyy is traditionally observed by many Muslim communities in remembrance of the birth and life of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), with the occasion commonly associated with 12 Rabi’ al-Awwal. The date and manner of observance, however, vary among Muslim communities.
Seerah as a methodology for the Ummah
In his sermon, Sheikh Al-Sudais affirmed that the biography of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is a foundational methodology for elevating and empowering the Muslim Ummah.
He urged Muslims to draw guidance from the Prophet’s biography and teachings, stressing that devotion to him should not be confined to particular seasons or occasions.
According to the Grand Mosque Imam, true devotion to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) requires continuous and practical adherence to his teachings and Sunnah in everyday life.
His message therefore emphasised that love for the Prophet (SAW) should be reflected in how Muslims live and practise his teachings on a continuing basis, rather than being expressed only during particular periods.

…Urges families to instil love for Prophet Muhammad in future generations
Sheikh Al-Sudais also urged families to instil love for Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in future generations.
He called for the Prophet’s life and teachings to be passed on to younger generations, ensuring that his example and authentic Sunnah remain a source of guidance for Muslims.
…Charges content creators to promote authentic Sunnah online
The Grand Mosque Imam further called on content creators to use digital platforms to spread the authentic Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
The appeal highlights the role of modern communication platforms in sharing authentic Prophetic teachings with wider audiences, particularly as digital platforms have become important channels for accessing religious content.

Sheikh Al-Sudais’s sermon thus placed emphasis on three interconnected responsibilities: learning from the biography of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), nurturing love for him among future generations and using contemporary platforms to disseminate his authentic Sunnah.
