As Türkiye commemorates Sultan Alp Arslan’s historic victory over the Byzantine Empire, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan invokes the spirit of 1071 in his call for a “Terror Free Türkiye” and a peaceful region.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan delivers a speech during the 955th anniversary commemoration of the 1071 Battle of Manzikert at the Malazgirt Battlefield Historical National Park, on August 26, 2026 in Malazgirt, Mus, Turkiye.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday reaffirmed Ankara’s commitment to achieving a “Terror-Free Türkiye” and a terror-free region during commemorations in Muş, warning that the nation will never bow to external pressure regarding its security and territorial integrity.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan marked the 955th anniversary of the Battle of Malazgirt on Wednesday with a visit to the eastern province of Muş, where he addressed thousands gathered to commemorate the 1071 victory.

The battle, led by Sultan Alp Arslan against the Byzantine Empire, is regarded as the pivotal moment that opened Anatolia to Turkish settlement and established centuries of Turkish sovereignty in the region. Erdogan emphasized that the spirit of Malazgirt continues to guide Türkiye’s resolve in protecting its borders and interests.

Speaking at the ceremony, the president linked the historical victory to contemporary security challenges facing the nation. He stressed that Türkiye has no choice but to remain powerful and united, expressing determination to transform the region into “a land of peace and well-being once again.” The commemoration served as a platform for Erdogan to outline his administration’s ongoing commitment to territorial integrity and regional stability.

Counter-terrorism resolve

Erdogan articulated a forceful stance against terrorism, declaring that Ankara would pursue its objectives without retreat. “We tied up our horse’s tail to achieve our goals of a Terror-Free Türkiye and a terror-free region,” he said, invoking a traditional metaphor that signifies unwavering commitment to a difficult endeavor.

The president vowed that national security would never be subject to external dictation or pressure. “We never bow before anyone else if the future of our homeland, our state and our nation is at stake,” he stated during his address. He further warned that adversaries attempting to obstruct Turkish progress through destabilization tactics would fail in their efforts, emphasizing that Türkiye’s strategic march toward peace and development remains irreversible.

Warning to ‘trap’ setters

Erdogan directed sharp criticism toward unnamed actors he accused of plotting against Turkish interests through subterfuge and incitement. “Those who think they can stop Türkiye’s and the Turkish nation’s blessed march through traps and provocations are doomed to disappointment,” he added, according to presidential sources. The remarks come amid ongoing cross-border operations and heightened security measures in southeastern provinces where counter-terrorism efforts have intensified in recent months.

The Battle of Malazgirt anniversary has historically served as a rallying point for nationalist sentiment and military solidarity in Türkiye, with this year’s ceremony emphasizing the connection between medieval victories and modern security doctrine. Erdogan’s appearance in Muş — located near the borders with Iran and Iraq — underscored the geographic centrality of eastern Anatolian provinces to both historical memory and current defense policy.
