Turkey has found a natural gas resource in the Black Sea, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced on Friday, describing the discovery as the largest natural gas reserve exploration in the country’s history.
Turkey’s drilling ship Fatih discovered 320 billion cubic meters of natural gas in the Black Sea at the Tuna-1 zone on July 20, Erdoğan added.
“Now I want to share our good news with you: Turkey has realised the biggest natural gas finding of its history in the Black Sea,” he said, adding Turkey aims to bring it to use in 2023 and to become a net energy exporter.
Turkey’s first drillship, Fatih, has been operating since late July in an exploration zone known as Tuna-1, about 100 nautical miles north of the Turkish coast in the western Black Sea.
Earlier on Wednesday, President Tayyip Erdogan told energy executives he will announce “good news” on Friday that will herald a “new period” for Turkey.
