The Kwara state government has announced that the ten schools where Muslim students were molested over the use of Hijab will no longer be reopening on Monday following threats from the Christian community.
In a press statement issued on Sunday, March 7, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, Mrs Kemi Adeosun said the affected schools will remain shut till further notice.
Mrs Adeosun said the decision has been taken for safety reasons.
According to her, the schools are C&S College Sabo Oke, St. Anthony College, Offa Road, ECWA School, Oja Iya, Surulere Baptist Secondary School, Bishop Smith Secondary School, Agba Dam, CAC Secondary School Asa Dam road, St. Barnabas Secondary School Sabo Oke, St. John School Maraba, St. Williams Secondary School Taiwo Isale, and St. James Secondary School Maraba.
It will be recalled that the Kwara state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN), and other Christian denominations vowed to occupy the affected public schools following Kwara government approval of the use of uniform fitting Hijab for willing Muslim female students.
Muslim News findings revealed that the approval of the Hijab on uniforms by the Committee, headed by the Deputy Governor, Kayode Alabi, a Christian, is in accordance with the provision of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The government has therefore directed schoolchildren and teachers in the affected schools to remain at home until a new directive is announced.
“The government remains committed to fairness, pluralism, and respect for the law and rights of every citizen at all times,” the statement said.
