MN Islamtainment: Five Turkish series enthralling in Nigeria

A still shot shows a war scene from "Kuruluş Osman."

Despite the huge success of Diriliş Ertuğrul, a Turkish TV drama series that captivated the entire world, there has been a big flair ignited in the hearts of Nigerians, especially Muslims, for Turkish series in general. In this edition of Islamtainment, AISHA HARUN takes our readers through the top historic Turkiye series showing every day of the week.

1. Kurulus Osman – a sequel to Dirilis Ertugrul – tops our list. This Turkish series is currently airing its third season, with new episodes released every Wednesday night on ATV and other online channels including osmanonline.co.uk.

Kurulus Osman centres on the glorious life of Osman Bey, the son of Ertugrul Ghazi and Halime Sultan of the popular Dirilis Ertugrul. In this multiple award-winning series, the struggles of Osman Bey against the Byzantium and the Monguls in his quest to establish control over the Ottoman dynasty is beautifully captured. This historical drama that tops our list is a masterpiece created by Mehmet Bozdag and stars Burak Ozcint, who played Osman Bey, among other significant Turkish actors. With its focus on Osman, the founder of the Ottoman Empire, history has definitely been brought right before our eyes.

2. Alparslan – Buyuk Selcuklu; sequel to Uyanis: Buyuk Selcuklu:

This Turkish Series is yet another sensational TV drama that describes the life and triumphs of one of the most important personalities in the history of Islam – Sultan Alparslan, the second Sultan of the Seljuk dynasty – whose significant role led to the expansion of the empire in the 11th century.

The movie’s lead role, Baris Arduç; as Sultan Alp Arslan, is one of the biggest highlights for fans of this movie across the world. New episodes of the series’ season 1 are released every Monday night on TRT and other platforms such as osmanonline.co.uk. This is indeed a rich historical depiction of the Seljuk Empire and a must-watch for every lover of historical events of the past.

3. Barbaroslar: Sword of the Mediterranean

This is yet another Turkish historical TV series that has captured the hearts of lots of fans across the world; and significantly Nigerians. This series is about 4 brothers namely: Ishak, Oruc, Hizir, and ilyas, who are sailors. These seafarers helped ensure the supremacy of the Ottoman Empire which made them the significant four in this series which currently airs on Kayi Family Online and osmanonline.co.uk with episodes released every Thursday.

The interesting part not to miss about this one is that the famous Dirilis Ertugrul character – Engin Altan Duzuatan plays the lead role.

4. Destan:

This is another fantastic Turkish series, from the producer of Dirilis Ertrugul and Kurulus Osman, Mehmet Bozdag. Since it released on Tuesday, November 21, 2021, Destan has already earned a spot in the hearts of fans across the world, Nigeria inclusive, especially as its lead actor, Ebru Sahin, who plays Akkiz, a legendary warrior, is a woman. It is about the love story of two strange birds, Akkız, and Batuga, and their quest to achieve the impossible by making swords and their hearts as shields.

Destan is a heroic adventure set in the year 750 AD. The story takes place during the spread of Islam and in an environment where Turks met Islam.

Isn’t it interesting that almost every day of the week (Monday to Thursday) is booked for fans all over the world to enjoy their favorite Turkish Series just how they like it?

5. Dirilis Ertugrul: Last but not least is the record-breaking Turkish series that attracted many to the Turkish TV drama series world. Although relatively old now – the last episode was aired last in May 2020, after recording for almost 6 years – million fans still watch this series and in fact, there is a high number of new fans who are just beginning to watch it. Undoubtedly, this series has a very significant reputation in the Turkish drama series world.

As fans expect new episodes of other recent Turkish series, they revisit this wonderful series on Netflix, osmanonline.co.uk and other platforms on Fridays, to refresh their memories of it, or to catch up – for those watching it newly.

In conclusion of our Turkish series top five on this edition of Islamtainment — one point that is hard to miss out in all of these series is the message of Islam vibrantly displayed. We can see a lot about the Islamic cultural tradition and history, which helps entrench these values more in our hearts due to the drama and entertainment effect. This enables us to appreciate the sacrifices of some of these great people of the past and how much they gave for the preservation of the Islamic heritage.
