The Companion – an association of Muslim men in business and in professions has lauded the selection process which culminated in the emergence of a Professor of Law, Wahab Olasupo Egbewole as the 12th Vice Chancellor of University of Ilorin.
The Muslim organisation in a statement signed by its National Amir Engr. Kamil Olalekan described the senior silk as a round peg in a round hole, adding that he is a reputable scholar imbued with requisite qualifications, cognate experience and wisdom to take University of Ilorin to enviable heights.
The Companion added that in Professor Wahab Egbewole, the Ivory Tower whose epithet is known as, “Better by far”, has found a passionate administrator whose DNA reflects the vision, values, yearnings and aspiration of the University.
While congratulating the new Vice Chancellor on his well-deserved appointment, the Muslim group enjoined Professor Egbewole not to jettison the laudable attributes which had stood him out in the past 25 years of his service at Unilorin, but to up the ante with a view to justifying the confidence reposed in him.
“You’ve got to build on the exemplary attributes and qualities which stood and raised you far above shoulder in the selection process”. It read.
The Companion contends that the appointment of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN couldn’t have come at a better time than now, that incessant strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has grounded university education in the nation’s public institutions.
The release equally solicited full support of the Governing Council of University of Ilorin, the various worker’s Unions (Academic and Non Academic), students and other stakeholders, for the new Vice-Chancellor, so that he would be the torchbearer for the realization of the dreams of its founding fathers.
The Companion prayed Allaah to strengthen Professor Wahab Egbewole in the administration of the institution, empower the erudite scholar and surround him with those who share his selfless service ideology, to fast track the realization of his vision for the institution.
It would be recalled that the Pro Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of University of Ilorin, Mallam Abidu Yazid on Friday September 9, announced a Professor of Law, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole SAN as the 12th Vice chancellor of the university.
Egbewole, 61, who has been in the institution for the past 25 years emerged as the Vice Chancellor of the institution after a vigorous selection procedure. He holds a Ph.D degree in Law and Jurisprudence.
At various times, Prof. Egbewole was the Head of Department and Dean Faculty of Law, and Chairman of the university’s chapter of ASUU among several other sterling appointments.
He is a member of the board of The Companion’s “Academy for Ethics and Leadership,” who has consistently collaborated with the Academy, in its concerted efforts at ending the perennial ASUU strike vis-a-vis the realisation of the autonomy/independent funding strategy for public universities to enable them remain afloat without government subvention.
The tenure of the five-year single term of the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Professor Sulyman Abdulkareem Age will come to an end on October 15, 2022.
