Scores of female students from both public and private schools in Ilorin converged at Lamp Bearers Islamic School to mark the International Day of the Girl Child on Tuesday, October 11, 2022.
The programme organised by the Center for Women’s Rights and Social Development was marked by series of programmes, including a lecture presentation that dwelled on leadership.
Convener of the Centre, Mrs. Mardiyyah Osinuga Bello, appreciated the students and other participants comprising Muslims and Christians for their attendance.
She urged the students to be willing to work towards active involvement in decision making, whilst stating examples of female models who are leaders both home and abroad.
The International Day of the Girl Child is observed on every October 11 to empower girls and amplify their voices.
Muslim News gathered that the theme for 2022 was “Our Time is Now – Our Future, Our Rights.”
The commemoration at Lamp Bearers, Ilorin, witnessed a pick and talk session for the girls, some of whom volunteered to discuss random topics.
The lecture session was facilitated by Mrs Halimah Kadara, a former Special Assistant to former Chairman of Moro Local Government, Kwara State. She encouraged the students to focus on what is right, get involved in beneficial activities, and be willing to choose the right leadership.
Goodwill messages were also entertained from invited guests including, Dr. Habibat Odenike of Government Day Girls Secondary School, Oko-Erin, Ilorin and Mrs. Olushesi Mutiat, a counselor and teacher from Lamp Bearers Islamic School, Ilorin.
While Dr. Odenike encouraged the students to take up roles at home willingly because charity begins at home, Mrs Olushesi explained to them that “the change we all crave starts from each of us as the leaders we condemn everyday are a direct replica of what the led too look like”.
