MPAC to FG: Break the cycle of condolences, deliver justice in Benue killings

Says Yelewata tragedy an affront to our humanity

A faith-based group, the Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC), Nigeria, has asked the government to move beyond the empty cycle of condemnations and condolences following the recent killings in Benue State.

The group described the attack on innocent souls as both a tragedy for the state and an assault on Nigeria’s shared humanity, unity, and collective future.

The attack which occurred in Yelewata community of the state reportedly claimed hundreds of lives including those of children.

In a statement by its Executive Chairman, Disu Kamor, MPAC said it joins millions of Nigerians in grief and disbelief at the mindless slaughter.

The group said the sanctity of human life is a sacred trust that should be inviolable and non-negotiable.

“No community, no family, no individual should ever have to live under the constant shadow of violence, impunity, and abandonment,” it added.

“What is happening in Benue is not merely an assault on those killed or left to mourn their dead. It is an assault on our shared humanity, on our unity as a nation, and on our collective future.”

MPAC called on the government and security agencies to “rise beyond the empty cycle of condemnations and condolences.”

It is time for bold, coordinated, and intelligence-led action, the group said.

“Nigeria must not continue to be a country where human life is cheapened by repeated failures of governance and security. Enough of the rhetoric. The time for action is now.”

MPAC also charged religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to unite in action.

“What this moment demands is decisive, sincere, and sustained effort to end the carnage and secure justice for the victims.

“We stand in solidarity with Benue State and all Nigerians of conscience in this hour of pain. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families, and we pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. We ask Almighty God to grant peace to our land, heal our wounds, and guide our leaders towards justice, righteousness, and compassion.”
