The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has launched an investigation into caterers and tour operators following the rejection of substandard meals served to Nigerian pilgrims by the Saudi Ministry of Health during the ongoing 2026 Hajj exercise.
The commission said the Saudi health authorities had continued to enforce strict food safety standards to safeguard pilgrims’ wellbeing, especially amid the prevailing weather conditions, leading to the rejection of some meals that failed to meet required handling and packaging standards.
Muslim News gathered that officials of the Saudi Ministry of Health were conducting routine inspections in Mina on the night of the incident when they reportedly encountered pilgrims from Sokoto and Kogi states protesting the quality of meals served for dinner.
The officials immediately intervened and swung into action in collaboration with NAHCON personnel who were also on the ground. The affected kitchen and service providers were subsequently shut down, while alternative light refreshments were provided to the pilgrims.
NAHCON, in a press statement titled “No compromise on food safety regulations,” confirmed that some dinner meals served on May 27, 2026, failed to meet required food handling and packaging standards and were therefore rejected in conjunction with Saudi authorities.
The commission added that members of its board visited affected state officials to explain the situation and reassure pilgrims.
NAHCON Chairman, Amb. Ismail Abba Yusuf, has therefore directed the Commission’s Security Committee to investigate the caterers involved, as well as those who facilitated their contracts.
NAHCON to sanction erring tour operators
In a related development, the Chairman also ordered the Central Security Committee to investigate tour operators accused of bringing in more pilgrims than they registered and allegedly exploiting pilgrims.
He warned that any operator found guilty would face sanctions, including withdrawal of operating licences.
NAHCON further disclosed that arrangements had been initiated for refunds to pilgrims affected by the rejected meals.
The Commission appreciated the understanding of pilgrims and reaffirmed its commitment to their welfare throughout the Hajj exercise.
“Thank you and may Allah accept our acts of worship,” the statement added.
