Saudi Arabia has replaced the Kiswa of the Holy Kaaba to mark the commencement of the Islamic New Year 1448AH, continuing a cherished annual tradition that symbolizes the Kingdom’s service to Islam’s holiest sanctuary.
The General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, through the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Holy Kaaba Kiswa, supervised the replacement process, which is carried out every year at the beginning of Muharram.
The process involved the removal of the old Kiswa and its gold embroidered ornaments, decorative elements, lamps, and other embellishments attached to the covering.

The curtain of the Kaaba’s door was also lowered in preparation for the installation of the new Kiswa in accordance with the long standing tradition associated with the Sacred House of Allah.
Muslim News gathered that the new Kiswa was transported from the King Abdulaziz Complex to the Grand Mosque through a carefully coordinated operational system designed to meet the highest international standards.
A specialized Saudi team oversaw the replacement exercise, which included raising the old Kiswa, removing its embroidered components, and installing the new covering on the Holy Kaaba.
The production of the new Kiswa relied on premium materials, including 825 kilograms of natural silk, 47 rolls of black silk for the outer covering, 400 kilograms of raw cotton for the inner lining, 60 kilograms of pure silver used in embroidery, and 120 kilograms of gold plated silver employed in the embroidery of Qur’anic verses and Islamic decorative motifs.
These materials underwent rigorous testing in the laboratories of the King Abdulaziz Complex to ensure compliance with the highest quality standards and durability under varying climatic conditions.

During the production process, Qur’anic verses and Islamic motifs were printed onto the fabric before being embroidered with gold and silver threads using highly precise techniques that reflect the advanced level of Saudi craftsmanship.
Hand weaving also remained an integral part of the process, particularly for specialized pieces and decorative elements that require exceptional skill and precision. Saudi craftsmen continue to preserve the artistic and heritage character that has distinguished the Kiswa throughout its history.
Upon completion of the various stages of manufacturing, the embroidered pieces were assembled to form the complete Kiswa before being prepared for installation on the Holy Kaaba.
