FRONT COVER REVIEW: “Celebrating excellence” and the bigger story behind Muslim News Nigeria’s 7th anniversary, MNAwards

A newspaper cover can announce an event, attract attention and invite readers to turn the pages. But occasionally, a cover does much more. It becomes a carefully constructed summary of what a publication stands for, what it has achieved and the conversation it wants its readers to have. That is the story told by the September 2026 special edition of Muslim News Nigeria, whose dominant message is captured in two words: “CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE.”

Released on Saturday, September 5, the e cover announces the publication’s 7th Anniversary Lecture and MNAwards Presentation, an event held on June 15, 2026. Although the occasion itself marked seven years of the newspaper’s journey, the publication is now in its eighth year, having been established in August 2018.

More importantly, however, the e-cover is not simply announcing an anniversary. It brings together three closely connected dimensions of the Muslim News Nigeria project: celebrating Muslim excellence, reporting Islam and changing the narratives about Muslims and Islam through responsible journalism.

TWO AWARD CATEGORIES, ONE CULTURE OF RECOGNISING EXCELLENCE

At the centre of the celebration are two distinct award categories that Muslim News Nigeria has developed over the years.

The first is the Nigerian and Global Muslim Personalities of the Year Awards (MNawards), an annual recognition that began in 2019 to celebrate Muslims who have distinguished themselves through their achievements, leadership and contributions to society and who are making the Ummah proud in Nigeria and across the globe.

It is a deliberate attempt to recognise successful Muslims wherever excellence is being demonstrated. Consequently, the award cuts across different fields, including leadership, politics, law, health, media, education, business and other professional and public spheres.

The long list of names displayed prominently on the e cover, Zulum, Namadi, Ali SAN, Alaro, Dangote, Hendricks, Yasir Qadhi, Sanni, Adedimeji, others honoured,” immediately communicates the breadth of that recognition.

The second is the Muslim Women of Substance recognition, dedicated exclusively to exceptional Muslim women in Nigeria who are making meaningful contributions in different professions and areas of society. The winners are announced and celebrated around International Women’s Day, giving the publication an opportunity to deliberately spotlight Muslim women whose achievements might otherwise receive inadequate attention.

This explains the second major awards headline on the e cover: “30 exceptional women recognised across diverse professions.” The two award categories are therefore not incidental additions to the anniversary. They represent an established culture of recognising Muslim achievement that has become an important part of the publication’s identity.

THE AWARDS WERE CELEBRATED LONG BEFORE THE CEREMONY

There is another important story behind the awards that the e-cover invites readers to discover.

Before the formal award presentation in June, Muslim News Nigeria had already produced two separate 16 page editions, one dedicated to announcing the winners of the Nigerian and Global Muslim Personalities of the Year Awards and another dedicated to the Muslim Women of Substance.

Those editions did considerably more than publish names. They provided detailed information about the awardees, their achievements and the reasons they emerged as winners. In other words, the recipients were given substantial publicity before they ever walked to the podium to receive their awards.

That level of treatment is unusual in Nigeria. Even awards organised by media organisations rarely receive such extensive editorial attention before the actual ceremony. Muslim News Nigeria has therefore turned the process of recognition itself into a publication project, using its newspaper to tell the stories of the people being honoured and explain why their contributions matter.

The result is a distinctive approach to media awards. The organisation does not simply announce winners, hand them plaques and move on. It gives them a professionally produced platform through which their achievements can be documented, read and remembered.

The colourful 16 page editions, with their extensive profiles, photographs and carefully produced graphics, also demonstrate that Muslim News Nigeria considers the celebration of Muslim excellence worthy of the same editorial investment normally reserved for major personalities and events.

The September edition now represents the next stage of that process. It is the post event edition, taking readers from the announcement and profiling of the winners to the actual anniversary lecture and MNAwards presentation.

FROM CELEBRATING ACHIEVEMENT TO “FRAMING THE FAITH

But the e-cover does not remain on awards for long.

Its second major editorial movement takes readers from the question of what Muslims are achieving to the question of how Muslims and Islam are represented.
That transition is captured by the headline: “Framing the faith: Panelists examine media narratives, public perception and balanced faith based reporting.”

Muslim News Nigeria has revealed Part 2 of its ‘30 Muslim Women of Substance’, printing thousands of copies for nationwide distribution, with a free e-paper download, making it the first free Islamic e-paper in Nigeria.

This is particularly significant because it reflects the theme of the anniversary lecture and the wider purpose of the gathering. The cover is effectively telling readers that alongside the celebration of Muslim excellence was a serious conversation about the media, public perception and the responsibility of those who tell stories about faith.

The e-cover cannot possibly carry every speech, presentation, intervention and discussion from the event. Its job is to identify the strongest stories and give readers reasons to turn to the inside pages. In that respect, the “Framing the faith” headline does exactly that. It tells the reader what major conversation took place at the event, while the inside stories provide the fuller account of what the speakers and panellists said.

THE E-COVER TURNS MEDIA ENGAGEMENT INTO A COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY

The other media related headlines deepen the conversation.

“Muslims must engage media more strategically — MPAC Nigeria boss” is accompanied by the warning that internal divisions weaken Muslims’ response to Islamophobia.

Then comes “Missioner Ansar Ud Deen urges Muslims to invest in media to counter anti Islam narratives,” followed by “Muslims must unite, support own media to project true image of Islam — MUSWEN President.”

Read together, these headlines form a powerful sequence. Muslims are being encouraged to engage the media strategically, invest in the media and support their own media platforms.

This is important because the message is not simply that mainstream media should report Muslims fairly. The e cover goes further by placing part of the responsibility on the Muslim community itself. If Muslims want their stories, achievements and faith to be better understood, they must participate in the media, develop media capacity, invest in media ownership and support credible platforms telling their stories.

That argument is particularly relevant to Muslim News Nigeria because the publication itself emerged from concerns about the way Islam and Muslims were being represented.

SAMI SHEHADEH BRINGS THE GLOBAL DIMENSION

The headline on TRT Arabi’s Sami Shehadeh provides another important connection.

“TRT Arabi’s Sami Shehadeh dedicates Global Muslim Media award to journalists murdered in Gaza”, with the accompanying line, “Says journalists’ sacrifices must not be forgotten,” gives the edition an international dimension.

His appearance on the e-cover is also significant because he is one of the recipients of the Global Muslim Personalities of the Year award, recognised in the media category for his journalism and reportage from Gaza. The full interview inside the edition gives readers the opportunity to go beyond the headline and discover his personal experience, reflections and story.

HERO OF JOURNALISM: SAMI SHEHADEH

The cover therefore uses his recognition to connect the Nigerian Muslim media conversation with the wider global struggle over journalism, conflict and competing narratives. The sacrifice of journalists in Gaza becomes part of a broader discussion about the importance of telling stories, preserving truth and ensuring that those who pay the ultimate price for journalism are not forgotten.

MUSLIM NEWS NIGERIA BECOMES PART OF THE ANNIVERSARY STORY

Perhaps one of the most interesting features of the e-cover is that the newspaper itself is not positioned merely as the reporter of the event. It becomes part of the story.

The headline, “The Companion Amir: Muslim News Nigeria an essential voice for Muslim community,” provides an endorsement of the publication’s role.
Similarly, “Arabel CEO hails Muslim News Nigeria’s 7 years of reporting Islam, praises Publisher’s nearly two decades of journalistic excellence” reflects recognition of the newspaper’s contribution and the experience behind its journalism.

Abayomi Nurain Mumuni’s message, “Mumuni congratulates MNAwards recipients, urges them to rally support for Muslim News,” adds another dimension. It links the celebration of Muslim excellence with the need to sustain the institution documenting that excellence.

At the 7th Anniversary Lecture and MNAwards Presentation of Muslim News Nigeria, the National Missioner of the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Sheikh AbdulRahman Ahmad, delivered a compelling address on the urgent need for Muslims to invest strategically in the media.

This is an important point. A media organisation cannot continue telling the stories of a community without the support of that community. The e-cover therefore subtly turns the anniversary into an appeal for collective ownership and support of Muslim journalism.

WHY “EIGHT YEARS AGO” APPEARS ON A SEVEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY EDITION

One headline may initially appear confusing to a reader: “How media misrepresentation sparked the birth of Muslim News Nigeria eight years ago” at the bottom strip of the e-cover.

Why eight years when the edition is about the 7th Anniversary Lecture and MNAwards Presentation? The answer lies in the timing.

The anniversary lecture and award presentation took place in June 2026, when Muslim News Nigeria was marking seven years. The e-cover, however, is being released in September 2026, by which time the newspaper has entered its eighth year, having been established in August 2018.

The two references therefore describe two different points in the newspaper’s journey. The seven year reference belongs to the anniversary event in June, while the eight year reference reflects the publication’s current age at the time of releasing this post event edition.

Far from being a contradiction, the distinction gives the anniversary story a useful sense of continuity. It shows that the newspaper is no longer simply celebrating the milestone it reached in June. It is already looking at the next chapter of its journey.

As conversations continue on the role of faith based media in countering misrepresentation and promoting balanced narratives about Islam and Muslims, the remarks of the National President of The Companion, Imam Nojeem Jimoh, have remained among the highlights of the 7th Anniversary Lecture and MNAwards Presentation organised by Muslim News Nigeria on Sunday, June 14, 2026, in Lagos.

THE COMMUNIQUE COULD GIVE THE EDITION A LASTING PURPOSE

There is also an important opportunity beyond documenting what happened at the event.

If the communique issued at the end of the anniversary lecture is carefully developed and reproduced in the edition, the publication could give the special edition a significance that goes beyond celebration.

The communique can preserve the key recommendations and collective positions that emerged from the gathering, particularly around media representation, Muslim participation in journalism, strategic engagement, media ownership, unity and the projection of Islam.

That would make the edition not only a record of an anniversary and awards ceremony, but also a document that captures a set of ideas and recommendations for the Muslim community.

THE COMMUNIQUE COULD GIVE THE EDITION A LASTING PURPOSE

If carefully developed and reproduced in the special edition, the anniversary lecture communique could give the publication a significance beyond celebrating Muslim News Nigeria’s anniversary.

L-R: Senior Broadcast Journalist with Voice of Nigeria, Mallam Hussain Bin Hyacinth, Chairman of the Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC), Mallam Kamor Disu; Chairman, MMPN Lagos chapter, Alhaji AbdulKabir Garuba; President of the Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria (MMPN), Alhaji AbdurRahman Balogun; Executive Director of Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Prof. Lakin Akintola; Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria, MUSWEN, Alhaji Rasaki Oladejo; Publisher Muslim News Nigeria, Rasheed Abubakar; Chairman AS Foundation, Dr Abdullahi Shuaib; Ali AbdulMajeed representative of Prof Abdulrazaq AbdulMajeed Alaro, and President of the Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria (IMAN), Prof. Ibrahim Oreagba, at the newspaper’s 7th Anniversary lecture held over the weekend.

It could serve as a practical guide for the Nigerian Muslim community on the challenges facing Muslims in the media and propose workable solutions, while also providing a global template for addressing issues such as media representation, Muslim participation in journalism, media ownership, strategic engagement, unity and the projection of Islam.

This would make the special edition not only a record of the anniversary, but also a lasting reference document for future action and media strategy.

CONCLUSION

Overall, the September 2026 special edition is more than a celebration of seven years of Muslim News Nigeria. It documents the newspaper’s journey, celebrates Muslim excellence and highlights the need for greater Muslim ownership of the media narrative.

Credit must go to the team led by the Publisher, Alhaji Rasheed Abubakar, for building Muslim News Nigeria into a platform for reporting Islam, celebrating Muslim achievements and challenging negative narratives about Muslims and their faith.

However, sustaining this work cannot be left to the publisher and his team alone. With the special edition still in production, Muslim brands, organisations and individuals can support its success through advertisements, sponsorships and donations.

The edition will be distributed free of charge across major central mosques and Islamic centres in Nigeria, making it an opportunity for Muslim brands to reach a relevant audience while supporting Muslim journalism.

Support can also come through donating or purchasing production gadgets, sponsoring projects, supporting journalists and staff, or contributing towards salaries. Those considering zakat support should consult qualified Islamic scholars on permissible avenues.

As the National Missioner of Ansar-Ud-Deen warned, previous Muslim media initiatives have disappeared despite their contributions. Muslim News Nigeria must not suffer the same fate. The challenge is not only to celebrate seven years of achievement, but to ensure that this voice survives, grows and continues to serve the Ummah. Supporting the newspaper today is an investment in preserving that voice for the future.
