Cross River community welcomes Adhan as Akamkpa gets first central mosque

Adhaan, the beautiful and soul lifting Muslim call to prayer was heard for the first time yesterday, Friday, June 28 in the Akamkpa local government area of Cross Rivers State, as dignitaries from far and near graced the unveiling of the Awi Central Mosque, Akamkpa.

The advent of the mosque, the first of its kind in the history of Akamkpa, a South-South, Christian dominated town, has now put an end to the unavailability of places of worship for Muslim faithful, while bringing more Cross River indigenes to Islam, the religion of peace.

Muslim News learnt that the mosque was a product of the collective efforts of a few brothers who reside in the community, before the cause was later championed by Jama’at Izalat al-Bid’a Wa Iqamat as-Sunnah, under the leadership of Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau.

The Secretary of the mosque, Mallam Zakariya Mohammed Abubakar glorified Allah on the official opening of the mosque, which he said started barely a year ago with the help of some committed brethren in faith.

“It all started by the efforts of some few brothers who are resident in the area around February  2018. The community had no mosque for the five daily prayers, including that of the big day, Jumuat. That is why they decided to do something about having a mosque. Though it was for the Muslim Ummah, but those at the forefront chose to hand it over to JIBWIS,” Mallam Abubakar said.

Tens of Muslim faithful thronged the mosque yesterday to observe the first Jumuah prayer in it, which was led by a prominent Northern scholar, Sheikh Abubakar Hero Argungu.

Mallam Abubakar said though the mosque has opened for the Muslim community, more still needs to be done to complete it.

He said, “We thank Allah for the successful opening. We appreciate every donation during the construction. We call on Nigerian Muslims to donate cash or building materials to fix tiles, build the toilets and bathrooms, the balcony, the ablution centre and the borehole.”
