Independence Day: Empower local production, MSSNLagos urges Tinubu

* Says nation becomes truly independent by solving local challenges with indigenous solutions

As Nigeria celebrates its 64th Independence Day, the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Unit has urged President Bola Tinubu to empower local production and support entrepreneurs with favourable policies to drive economic growth.

The Muslim students’ body made the appeal in a statement signed by its Amir (President), Kamoldeen Abiona on Tuesday, marking this year’s Independence Day celebration.

Abiona extended heartfelt congratulations to all Nigerians, saying, while the Independence Day commemorates our nation’s political freedom, it is crucial that we reflect on the depth of our independence in economic and industrial terms.

He urged the Nigerian government to ensure that the nation becomes truly independent by solving local challenges with indigenous solutions.

“This requires prioritising the enhancement of home-based production and industrialisation, which will not only foster job creation but also promote local self-sufficiency and economic stability,” he said.

The statement reads, “To achieve this, local producers and entrepreneurs must be encouraged through government support and favourable policies. The importation of finished goods should be restricted, and the exportation of raw materials that are essential for local consumption and production should be minimised. In particular, in the agricultural sector, retaining key raw materials will mitigate food scarcity and high costs, helping to reduce inflation and boost local productivity.

“However, we must also emphasise that the responsibility for economic development cannot rest solely on the Federal Government. We call on state governments and local authorities to play their parts in driving economic progress.

“They must develop regional economies in line with these strategies to contribute to national growth. Every level of government must be aligned in creating a conducive environment for local industries and producers to thrive, ensuring that we build an economy that serves the needs of all Nigerians.”

Abiona noted that as we mark this important occasion, government at all levels must commit to making Nigeria truly independent in every sense— politically, economically, and industrially, adding that the success of our nation lies in harnessing our local resources, supporting our entrepreneurs, and ensuring that all Nigerians benefit from a thriving economy.
