One of Nigeria’s oldest Islamic organisations, Jama’at-ul Islamiyya of Nigeria, has unveiled a Centenary School Project aimed at strengthening its educational institutions and producing a new generation equipped with modern knowledge, Islamic values and a strong sense of responsibility to society.

The initiative was unveiled on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at the 12th Triennial National Conference of the organisation held at the Jama’at-ul Islamiyya of Nigeria Mosque, Magodo, Lagos.

The conference, themed, “Nigeria’s Political Adventure, Insecurity and Need for More Radical Approach to Stability,” brought together members of the Board of Trustees, Council of Elders, National Executive Council, spiritual leadership, branch and divisional leaders, women and youth leaders, Muslim scholars and other stakeholders.

Muslim News gathered that the event was chaired by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Crescent University, Abeokuta, Alhaji Rafiu Adisa Ebiti, while former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Alhaja Sinatu Aderoju Ojikutu (nee Adeoba), served as chairperson.

The President of Jama’at-ul Islamiyya of Nigeria, Engr. Hashim Oyekan, said the school project was conceived as part of the organisation’s long-term vision of using education to transform society and prepare future generations for leadership.

According to Engr. Oyekan, the project is designed to mobilise support for the development of the Jama’at’s group of schools and provide accessible, high-quality modern education heavily grounded in Islamic values.

He said the initiative would help equip young Nigerians to lead with both competence and conscience.

“Education remains the most powerful tool for social transformation and moral elevation,” Oyekan said.

He appealed to distinguished guests, donors and members of Jama’at-ul Islamiyya to support the project, describing contributions to it as an investment in a legacy that would continue to benefit generations to come.

The organisation also called for donations in support of the Centenary School Project and other Jama’at projects.

Jama’at seeks practical solutions to national challenges

In his welcome address, Engr. Oyekan said the conference was taking place at a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s history, with the country facing complex socio-political and security challenges.

He said religious organisations could not remain indifferent to the plight of society, stressing that they had a responsibility to contribute to national development and the search for solutions to insecurity and instability.

“Stability cannot be achieved through rhetoric alone; it demands actionable solutions, unyielding justice, and a collective commitment from both leadership and the citizenry,” he said.

Engr. Oyekan said political and economic strategies must also be anchored on moral discipline, linking the organisation’s national concerns with its focus on reviving mosques as centres of knowledge, moral character formation and community development.

He said mosques must return to their historic roles beyond places of ritual worship and become vibrant centres where knowledge is acquired, character is developed and communities are strengthened.

Fashola calls for return to law and order to tackle insecurity

Muslim News gathered that the keynote address was delivered by former Lagos State Governor and ex-Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), who called for a radical approach to tackling insecurity in Nigeria.

Mr. Fashola said Nigeria must restore respect for law and order, strengthen law enforcement institutions and address the values shaping citizens’ conduct.

He said the restoration of law and order should be the first radical step towards achieving stability, urging Nigerians to collectively commit to building a society where nobody was above the law.

The former Minister stressed that the principle should apply irrespective of political affiliation, religion or ethnicity, while urging citizens to examine the values they were passing to younger generations.

Adangba: Strong mosque leadership key to tackling societal decay

The conference therefore featured a lecture titled, “Taqwa: A Means of Reviving Mosques as Centres of Knowledge and Moral Discipline for Lasting Community Impacts.”

The scheduled guest lecturer, the Chief Missioner of Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Sheikh Abdul Rahman Ahmad Olanrewaju, was represented by the Chief Imam of Muhammad Rasulullah Mosque, Surulere, Lagos, Sheikh Abdurrahman Sulaiman Adangba.

Sheikh Adangba identified family, social and economic factors as some of the issues responsible for confusion and decay in society, saying they must be addressed to restore society to the desired path.

“The whole lecture is about the structure for the Muslim Ummah,” he said, stressing the need to address societal decadence from its roots.

He described the mosque as the House of Allah and a place where Muslims should gather not only for worship but also to deliberate on their collective future and contribute to the development of society.
Sheikh Adangba also stressed the importance of knowledge, wisdom, justice and effective mosque leadership in achieving the desired transformation.
