Focus on survival and significance, experts advise Muslim students

A data analyst and technology expert, Mr. Saheed Bashir has advised Muslim students to utilise the benefits in digital knowledge to improve their survival and significance in the society, noting that, “we live presently in a data driven society.”

Saheed, a data and analytics manager of PwC made this known while speaking at the first Virtual Capacity Building Course (CBC) organised by the Council of Higher Institutions (COHI) in Lagos, with the theme; “Survival of the Smartest in a Data Driven Society”.

The programme which was well attended on social media by students from different tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

The technology  expert harped on the importance of data and analytics, stating that: “We live in a data driven society where big data is being generated by every digital process, systems, and sensors around us.

“Organisations and government agencies are adopting advanced data analytics strategies to derive real time insights from these data. This enables better decision making in optimizing operations, preventing threats and fraud, and capitalising on new revenue sources.

“As Muslims, we should not just focus on survival but also on significance. In the world currently, Muslims have always been at a disadvantage.”

He urged tertiary institution students to key into the Massive Open Online Courses and also ensure they have not less than 10 skills.

Also speaking at the event, Senior Special Adviser to Lagos State Government on Science and Technology who doubles as Chairman of the occasion, Engr. Saheed Balogun, urged the students to conjugate soft skills with their courses of study and make themselves relevant in the world.

On the sidelines of the event, the Coordinator, Abdulbasit Abdulsalam appreciated the Chairman of the occasion, guest speaker, students and others who graced the event, explaining that the theme of the event was chosen to prepare students ahead of the labour market and the largely data driven society.
