At GMP leadership workshop: Lives were transformed, minds were empowered

+ Everything you need to know about the medical entrepreneurship program

Last Sunday, October 14, 2018 in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, hundreds of Muslim youths in the health professions and their counterparts in humanities and management graced the 2018 GMP Youth Leadership Workshop, where their lives were transformed and their minds were empowered.

The workshop, the second edition of its kind, was an initiative of the Medical Wing of the Guild of Muslim Professionals (GMP), in conjunction with the Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria (IMAN), Lagos Chapter and the Muslim Pharmacists Association of Nigeria (MPAN), Lagos Chapter.

The much publicised event was held at the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) Training Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, with the theme: “The Entrepreneurial Health Care Professional: Charting the Way Forward”.

The workshop, which was chaired by Professor Abdul Semiu Musa (MD, FMC, Abeokuta), had in attendance very erudite scholars and speakers of international repute to coach the attendees.

Participants at the workshop

The Chairman of the program, Prof Musa during his opening speech urged the Muslims to come together in order to exhibit a desperately needed understanding of Islam by pulling funds and commitments together to solve problems peculiar to the Muslims.

“The Guild of Muslim Professionals is challenged to initiate and mobilize every intending Nigerian pilgrim during the annual Hajj exercise to remit a proposed Five Thousand Naira to a Sultan-commissioned committee.

“After factoring the number of Nigerians that engage in Hajj on a yearly basis, these pulled funds can build schools, hospitals, and empower the Muslims”.

He concluded his opening speech by appealing to the attendees that they should begin to add value to every society and be the best at their crafts. He made reference to the Glorious Quran.

The training proper began with Pharmacist Sesan Kareem of the Mareek Foundation opening the floor with an highly impacting and energetically delivered discussion on ‘Developing Leadership and Entrepreneurship Skills’.

According to him, “Muslims are the best of humans, equipped with all the potentials to explore new possibilities. He added that, “An entrepreneur is driven by a mission to achieve, a vision based on set goals backed up by strategies and guided by core values”.

He further discussed the need for everyone to be an entrepreneur.

“Innovation built on comparative advantage and aggressive marketing are rudimental to the success of any business structure. An estimated 85 percent of the world’s richest are entrepreneurs, buttressing the need for greater involvement of health professionals in entrepreneurship”, he stated.

Dr Jawando Dolamu, who is the Medical Director of FIRMCARE Diagnostics & Medical Services and the Managing Partner of FIRMCARE Consulting Limited also anchored another training session, where he presented a well researched talk on: ‘How to Run a Viable Hospital/Diagnostic Centre’.

He said: “A good entrepreneur learns to differentiate himself in perception and delivery. His mind is lifted, he is visionary. This is the only way he outperforms his contemporaries.

“The principle of ‘equality’ prescribes that every client is treated to a ‘wow effect’. Excellent customer service, creativity and flexibility in service delivery are strongly recommended.”

Another session of the training, which had Dr. Jubril Salahudeen (head of an E-payment solution team, and an executive director in a multi-billion Naira business) as the discussant focused on the professional and spiritual life of the Muslims, with the title: ‘Medical Entrepreneurship’.

“A medical entrepreneur needs to learn about scaling and expansion, it is very critical to business growth and development. Endurance in business is essential. Live a few years of your life like most people would not, so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people won’t.’

He continued, “the Government has demonstrated a gross lack of interest in the health and well being of Nigerians, concerned policy makers are hereby called to action”.

A case study of Amrita Hospital, India was made to illustrate the possibilities of expansion and optimal functioning in Nigerian hospitals.

The last session which was moderated by a Niqobi, Hajia Kifayah Adeniyi, passionately took the house through a journey of Self Discovery, in what was no doubt a brilliantly delivered presentation.

In her discussion, the famously tagged ‘Mompreneur’ urged everyone to be spiritually conscious, success oriented, imagine great possibilities, shun pride and negotiate objectively.

The workshop was moderated by Sister Aminat Adams; an OAP at Silverbird TV and trained MC.

After the training session, there was an award presentation and panel discussion. Owing to the contribution and in recognition of their dedication and commitment to the service of humanity, GMP and Islam over the years, the following people were honored with plaques.

They are Dr Jubril Salahudeen, Pharmacist Sesan Kareem, Dr Jawando Dolamu and Sister Kifayah Adeniyi.

During the panel session, which featured Dr. Mohammed Salisu – A consultant pediatrician and Islamic scholar, Pharmacist Lekan Asuni – Former MD, GSK and successful entrepreneur, Dr Dolamu Jawando – CEO of a foremost diagnostic centre, Sister Kifayah Adeniyi – Teacher and successful entrepreneur, and Pharmacist Sesan Kareem – Life coach, thorough justice was done to the panel session, and the attendees were quite elated.

The attendees were grouped in fours to engage in idea development task and mental drills. These were used to access the yields of the workshop. All the participants left at their various peak states and were ready for great exploits.

At the end of the training, lives were transformed, minds were empowered and the sky cannot be the limit any longer.
