Lagos for Qur’an: 600 Muslim Youths to compete in National Qur’an Recitation Competition

…Winner to smile home with brand new Hyundai Car, represent Nigeria at International Competitions

No fewer than 600 Muslim youths from across the 36 states of the Federation, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, are expected to participate in the 34th edition of the National Qur’an Recitation Competition tagged ‘Lagos for Qur’an 1441 (2020)’.

Making the disclosure at a press conference to primarily create awareness for Lagos state’s hosting of the annual competition, the Chairman, Local Organising Committee, Otunba Abdul-Fatai Olukoga said the event proper will hold between December 27, 2019 and January 4, 2020.

Alhaji Olukoga told newsmen at the press conference held at the Alausa Secretariat Mosque Hall, Ikeja, Lagos, that 600 Muslim youths who have committed the Qur’an to memory will be competing while the winning prizes (will) include a brand new Hyundia, hajj slots, tricycles, motorcycles and lot of other consolation prizes.

The overall winner, according to the host, Lagos State Muslim Community, will represent the country at the International tournament holding in Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and other Muslim countries .

Alhaji Olukoga disclosed that the tournament has 6 categories each for Male and female competitors, adding, “each participating state will be allowed to field competitors in a maximum of 5 categories each for Male and Female.”

Local Organising Committee (LOC) members

“Both the formal opening and grand finale will hold at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, on December 24, 2019 and January 4, 2020 respectively, while recitations/competitions are scheduled to hold at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka.

To successfully execute the laudable project, first introduced in Nigeria by the Centre for Islamic Studies, Uthman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto in 1986, the Chairman said N290 million has been budgeted, thereby calling on well-meaning individuals and organisations to support in raising the fund.

While thanking the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar Sa’ad III; the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, as well as prominent Islamic scholars within and outside Lagos State for their support so far towards the success of the competition, Olukoga appealed to other Nigerians to join in the ‘’laudable effort and stand to be counted’’.

It would be recalled that Lagos State hosted the competition for the first time in 1992.
