Netflix releases new film, Farha, on Israeli ethnic cleansing of Palestinians during Nakba

A Netflix film depicting Zionist militias killing and displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians during An-Nakba meaning, The Catastrophe, has caused outrage in Israel but also praised for giving an accurate account of the massacres and ethnic cleansing during the 1948 creation of Israel.

The film ‘Farha’, directed by Jordanian filmmaker, Darine Sallam was first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on 14th September 2021. It was later screened at the Palestine Cinema Day festival in Ramallah, Palestine, on 7 November 2022, and began airing on Netflix on Thursday, December 1, 2022.

Muslim News Islamtainment gathered that the 1 hour, 36 minutes film informed the audiences of the tragedy faced by Palestinians during the bloody creation of the State of Israel.

The Nakba saw 750,000 Palestinians expelled from their homes by Zionist militias in a campaign that included murder, rape, and death threats.

The film is based on a true life story, which depicts a 14-year-old girl, Farha, witnessing the killing of her family friend through a hole in the wall of her home, after her father hid her from a rampaging Zionist militia.

Muslim News Islamtainment findings revealed that several Israel officials have condemned the film and criticized Netflix for streaming it.

However, Palestinians and their supporters have doubled down in support of the film, stating that there is nothing in the movie that did not happen in reality.

‘Not afraid to tell the truth’

In different interviews, the film director has said she made the movie – based on the story of her family friend – to shed light on the root cause of the conflict and occupation of Palestinian territories.

“The story travelled over the years to reach me. It stayed with me. When I was a child, I had this fear of closed, dark places and I kept thinking of this girl and what happened to her,” Sallam told Arab News.

Israeli officials didn't want depictions of the true story of what happened to Palestinians in 1948 to be shown on Netflix. But Netflix stood firm & released 'Farha' today. Watch it!pic.twitter.com/FyJv13up5a

The effects of the Nakba and subsequent invasions of Palestinians territories live on today, with around 5.7 million Palestinian refugees living in the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

Israeli oppression of Palestinians remains widespread, through arbitrary detentions, killings, and home evictions.

Anyone who empathised with Anne Franks story needs to watch Farha on Netflix. True Story of a Palestinian girl who survived the Nakba.
