* New Muslim lawyers leader pledges to strengthen unity, empower young lawyers
Congratulations have continued to pour in for prominent legal practitioner and hijab advocate, Alhaji Hassan Taiwo Fajimite, following his emergence as the new National President of the Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria.
Among those celebrating his emergence are the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), the Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria (MMPN) and the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Unit, all of which described his election as well deserved and expressed confidence in his ability to provide purposeful leadership for the association.
Alhaji Fajimite emerged as the new MULAN president through the association’s Shurah consultative selection process after the successful conclusion of its 7th Annual General Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Kano State.
His emergence ushered in a new national executive that will steer the affairs of the association for the 2026 to 2028 tenure.
The new national executive also includes Mohammed Adeleke Hakeem of Sokoto State as First National Vice President, Kasim B. Odedeji of Osun State as Second National Vice President and Aminu Umar Kalgo of Kebbi State as Secretary General.
Others are Dr Muhammad Tukur Jibril of Kaduna State as First Assistant Secretary, Bakari Ibrahim of Taraba State as Second Assistant Secretary, Hauwa Abbas of Adamawa State as Treasurer and Fatima Shittu Olalade of Ogun State as Financial Secretary.
Also elected are Mohammed Inuwa of Kano State as Assistant Financial Secretary, Khadeejat K. Adeniyi of Ekiti State as Welfare Secretary, Abdulrahman Ahmad Paiko of Niger State as National Publicity Secretary and Saefullah Bala Abdullahi of Nasarawa State as National Auditor.
In its inaugural statement, the new leadership thanked members for the confidence reposed in it and pledged to strengthen the association, promote professional excellence, improve members’ welfare, support young lawyers, deepen institutional capacity and provide principled leadership on issues affecting both the legal profession and the wider Nigerian society.
The administration also promised to build strategic partnerships while advancing the ideals of justice, unity, ethical legal practice and service to humanity.
Muslim News gathered that Alhaji Hassan Taiwo Fajimite is widely recognised across the country for leading the landmark legal battle that secured the constitutional right of Muslim female students to wear the hijab in Lagos State public schools.
As lead counsel to the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit, he represented the organisation throughout the prolonged litigation, from the commencement of the case in 2013 to the Court of Appeal victory in 2016 and the final Supreme Court judgment delivered in 2022.
The Kano conference attracted Muslim legal practitioners, judicial officers, Senior Advocates of Nigeria, academics and other stakeholders from across the country who deliberated on legal practice, professional development, ethical standards and issues of national importance.
Participants reaffirmed the association’s commitment to continuous legal education, intellectual development and nation building.
MURIC hails new president, describes him as ‘SAN of the Ummah’
The Muslim Rights Concern congratulated Fajimite on his emergence, describing him as a hardworking, humble and principled legal practitioner whose commitment to defending the rights of Muslims has earned him widespread respect.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC said MULAN could not have found a better leader at such a critical period.
The organisation described him as “a legal luminary of immense standing” and praised his selflessness and sacrifices in the service of Islam.
According to the group, Fajimite has consistently been at the forefront of legal battles involving Muslims in South West Nigeria.
“In MURIC, we call him the SAN of the Ummah,” the statement added.
MMPN seeks focus on young lawyers
The Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria also congratulated the new MULAN president, saying his election reflected the confidence reposed in his leadership, integrity and professional competence.
Its National President, Alhaji Abdur Rahman Balogun, said the association was confident that MULAN under Alhaji Fajimite would continue to promote the rule of law, safeguard fundamental rights, advance legal scholarship and contribute meaningfully to national development.
The media body urged the new leadership to prioritise the empowerment of young lawyers, protect the rights of the Muslim community and strengthen collaboration with professional organisations.
It also pledged closer cooperation with MULAN in promoting justice, combating misinformation and projecting the true image of Islam through responsible journalism.
MSSN Lagos celebrates hijab victory lawyer
The Muslim students body, under the leadership of its Amir, Dr. Ajibola Yusuf Salami, also felicitated Fajimite, describing his election as a fitting recognition of his years of dedication to justice, advocacy and service to the Muslim Ummah.
The society recalled his pivotal role as lead counsel during the landmark hijab litigation against the Lagos State Government, which culminated in the Supreme Court judgment affirming the rights of Muslim female students to wear the hijab in public schools.
MSSN Lagos expressed confidence that his experience, leadership and commitment to Islamic values would take MULAN to greater heights.
The society prayed that Allah would grant him wisdom, strength and guidance to lead the association with justice, fairness and excellence.
With congratulatory messages continuing to arrive from different organisations and stakeholders, expectations are high that the Fajimite administration will consolidate the achievements of previous leaderships while strengthening MULAN’s role in promoting justice, defending constitutional rights, advancing legal excellence and mentoring the next generation of Muslim lawyers in Nigeria.
